Many westerners are unaware that China is quickly becoming the second-largest movie market in the world, falling just behind the United States. Chinese cinemas raked in an impressive $1.5 billion last year, despite the fact that only 20 international films are permitted annually.
China’s annual cap on international films should interest you for a few reasons.
For decades, several countries throughout the world have imposed similar restrictions to keep Hollywood from dominating domestic film sales. In Italy for example, where American films are held in high regard, a cap on international films has ensured that local films have a greater chance of being produced. The world now recognizes Italy for having produced some of the most elite, nonrealistic films of the past century: “The Bicycle Thief”(1948) and “La Dolce Vita” (1960) are among several classics.
This is no different in China. Cinema ticket prices will continue to increase as the economy improves, and Chinese citizens are willing to pay to see a variety of films. Hopefully these fans will grow to appreciate domestic films, in addition to the best Hollywood has to offer.
But as long as this Chinese cap on international films does not increase, the competition among American film studios will remain fierce. Ticket sales in China, and elsewhere abroad, can help ensure a film’s commercial success. Obviously, most film studios look at China for the business opportunity.
Avatar, which was released in 2009, grossed more than $200 million in China. It is estimated that the latest Pirates of the Caribbean sequel has already matched Avatar’s opening weekend total.
Serenity Media has been fortunate to work on several projects which have found distribution in China. We do not want to toot any horns, but our success in China has allowed us to continue producing uplifting, positive films for the whole world to enjoy.
From our experience, we know Chinese filmgoers to be genuinely interested in the cinema, and this is certainly not a fad.
ear Friend,
Thousands of mother dogs are suffering in puppy mills, spending their lives in cramped wire cages. These mothers are forced to breed in continuous cycles to produce puppies for the pet industry.
Mother dogs don’t get to care for their puppies; they are taken away at eight weeks old. When they can’t breed, the mother dogs are discarded or killed. That’s why I’m joining The Humane Society of the United States in speaking out during Puppy Mill Action Week.
Each day this week, you can take action against this cruel industry. Start by joining me today in remembering the dogs suffering in puppy mills — watch my video, then sign the pledge to help stop puppy mill cruelty »
Sincerely,
Colbie Caillat
A triptych by living Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang sold for 79 million Hong Kong dollars (US$10 million) on Sunday in Hong Kong, setting a new world record for contemporary Chinese art sold at auction.
The work, “Forever Lasting Love,” sold for more than double its high estimate. It was one of several other record-breaking sales in the highly anticipated auction of a large, unrivaled collection of early Chinese contemporary art owned by Belgian Guy Ullens. Despite some early intrigue surrounding the sale, the Ullens collection fetched HK$427 million – more than four times its presale estimate.
Mr. Ullens was one of the first to collect Chinese contemporary art. He began building his private collection in the 1980s, and his collection includes early pivotal works from the art movement’s biggest names.
Sotheby’s, the house behind the auction, sold all 106 lots that made up about 10% of Mr. Ullens’s Chinese art holdings. Evelyn Lin, Sotheby’s head of contemporary Asian art, calls the collection a “visualization of the Chinese nation’s history” and says that it is museum-worthy in its quality and breadth.
In a packed room on Sunday, bidding battles between buyers in the room and on the phones upped the prices for artworks from blue-chip Chinese artists such as Zhang Peili and Wang Guangyi.
But works by Zhang Xiaogang were the stars of the sale.
CHINA FACT SHEET 2011
While China’s middle class right now consists of only a quarter of the population, they are set to grow to nearly half the total population by 2020, according to Euromonitor. That means that 700 million our of the estimated 1.45 billion people of 2020 will have an income of roughly between 80,000RMB (11,800USD) to 120,000RMB (17,700USD) a Year.
The study found that the Chinese middle class was concentrated mainly in urban areas and is comprised of entrepreneurs and managers in high-tech companies, foreign firms and financial institutions, as well as some self-employed private entrepreneurs. While China was working to reduce the income gap, it was unlikely that they could enough to stop the build up of middle class in cities.
Preparing for China’s Urban Billion, predicts that China’s urban population will expand from 604 million in 2008 to 926 million in 2025, and hit the one billion mark (out of a total population of 1.5 billion) by 2030.
Over the last four years, the number of screens in China has doubled to more than 6,200, a figure that’s projected to double again by 2016.

China’s 1.3bn people make up one-fifth of the world’s population. But strict rules and changing lifestyles have led to lower growth rates. Most urban couples are bound by the “One Child” policy. Rural families are allowed a second child if their first-born is a girl. Many go to great lengths to ensure they have boys which officials believe is leading to a growing gender imbalance.
China is seeing a great movement of population from the rural interior to the cities in the east. In 1950, the urban population represented less than 13% of the total – it is now about 40% and is expected to reach 60% by 2030.
From magnifying glasses to steam engines, scientists through the centuries have found innovative ways to harness the power of the sun. Converting more solar power into electricity is high on the political agenda in many countries, amid the push to find domestic energy sources that are less polluting than fossil fuels.
Despite rapid growth in recent years, solar power accounts for less than 1 percent of United States electricity use. Solar power is more entrenched in European countries such as Spain and Germany, which have promoted its development with strong incentives called feed-in tariffs, which require electric utilities to buy solar power at a high, fixed price. In the United States, California is by far the leading solar state.
The United States accounts for $1.6 billion of the world’s $29 billion market for solar panels. China has emerged as the world’s dominant producer of solar panels in the last two years. It accounted for at least half the world’s production in 2010, and its market share is rising rapidly.
